Sean Gray, of Fan Death Records, and local DJ, DENMAN, have been working tirelessly for the last few months on their much lauded monthly, No Love Lost, garnering attention and praise from Baltimore to New York and beyond. This Saturday they will hold their largest event yet, hosting the biggest contemporary cold wave group in the country, Xeno and Oaklander.
Xeno and Oaklander, (comprised of duo, Liz Wendelbo, and Sean McBride), have been crafting haunting swaths of analogue synthesizer based music, since 2004, and have been part of the cold wave revival, fostered by Wierd Records, from the very beginning. Their 2009 album, “Sentinelle,” on Wierd, sent huge ripples through the independent music community, where they’ve continued to thrive. Since then they’ve played all over the US, and out into many corners beyond. Yet, this Saturday, Dec. the 4th, they will make a rare DC appearance.
Equally impressive is the support for the show. Beyond the No Love Lost DJ’s, the event will kick off with DC’s newest musical asset, Phonic Riot. Somewhere between Zola Jesus, and SST era Sonic Youth, Phonic Riot have only played two shows, but have quickly become a name jetting through the local music scene.
Following that, Adam Stroupe’s solo project, Death Domain, strips music down to the bone, leaving only hollow sockets behind. He’s generated not only a large following from the minimal synth community, but also from the music blogosphere in general, not to mention notice from places such as Fader.
Finally, the night is rounded out by the hypnotic DC sounds of, Screen Vinyl Image. SVI has continued to grow in popularity, most recently appearing on Mishka’s, “Guide to Grave Wave,” compilation, (Mishka also had some nice things to say about their most recent, “Ice Station,” release.) The rich and noisy layers of sound that SVI are known for have garnered praise starting in DC, and ending somewhere across Europe.
It’s sure to be an epic night of sonic misanthropy, and we could not be more pleased to host it.
